5 out of 5 stars A Deep Understanding of the Mechanics of Rap Music   January 31, 2010

This book is an excellent way to get an inside view of what Rap music is and gives great explanations of the techniques and internal structures of the genre. This book will please Rap aficionados and give Rap detractors some good reasons to rethink their viewpoints. Especially interesting are the many insider viewpoints that were captured in excerpts from the exhaustive interviews the author conducted while gathering material.

This book is different from the usual prescriptive "How To" titles, in that the author takes a back seat and lets the artists explain their craft. Quotes from exclusive interviews are cleverly interwoven and presented as discussions of flow, content, writing, delivery and so on.This also allows the reader to get a flavour of the varied personalities and different approaches of a wide cross-section of acclaimed rap artists.

The 'Flow diagrams', based on how the rappers write down their flows, make it easy to actually see how flow works and the techniques used.

An added bonus is that the title of every song track mentioned or analysed in the book appears on the author's website - with a direct link to a YouTube video - so you can instantly check out any unfamiliar songs.

5 out of 5 stars Not to be confused with other "How to" hip hop books....   December 16, 2009

It is clear that the author of this book is a student and fan of hip hop culture. I've come across many disposable "How to DJ", "How to be an MC", etc etc type books. I mistakenly thought this was another one of those. Not so. This is the book that those others wish they could be, with the insights & analysis that a real hip hop fan and MC alike will find entertaining and educational.

I highly recommend this.

This book was suggested to me by my producer/engineer as a must read. Once the book arrived, I could see why. The book is full of excerts from big names and legends of the rap industry. Ever wonder how your favorite artist writes a hook? It's covered. Been curious how to up your recording ability? It's in there too. All and all this is a great book if for just an insight into The Game. In fact we have weekly lessons and even homework concerning things convered in this book.

Great book - crammed full of useful info I haven't seen anywhere else, all from the actual MCs. It also covers a lot of history by showing who influenced who and by covering the making of a lot of specific tracks.

The range of artists giving advice is incredible.
It's great to see so many of the pioneers and classic guys in there like Kool G Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, Mobb Deep, Cypress Hill, Schoolly D, A Tribe Called Quest, Black Moon, Heltah Skeltah, AZ, Pharcyde, Das EFX, X-Clan, etc.

Some of my favorite more recent lyricists are also in there... I particularly liked the insights from Pharoahe Monch, Clipse, Immortal Technique, Styles P, Tech N9ne, Crooked I, Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples, Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, and Jurassic 5 - a lot of great quotes from all of them with really useful tricks of the trade.

The way that specific artists cover what they do best is also very helpful - eg. Twista talking about fast rapping, will-i-am and Nelly talking about making hits, Kool G Rap going through a story.

Even artists not interviewed are well covered... eg. Masta Ace talks about Rakim and his influence, several artists talk about and break down Eminem and Jay-Z's techniques, and you get people like Lady of Rage and Royce Da 5'9" talking about working with DJ Premier and Dr. Dre.

The breakdown of how "flow" works is also very, very thorough. Using diagrams, you can see exactly how flows work and how all the rhymes and rhythms fit together - something I have not seen before.

Definitely a must-read for Hip-Hop fans, to learn more about rapping, the MCs, and the history... and of course incredible for those who want to learn how to rap.

Highly recommended.
